Abraham Stoker nacque a Clontarf (Dublino, Irlanda, l'8 novembre 1847.
Da bambino la sua salute cagionevole lo costrinse a rimanere spesso isolato e a trascorrere lunghi periodi a letto. All'età di sette anni guarì spontaneamente tanto che divenne uno sportivo e un brillante studente che si laureò in matematica al Trinity College di Dublino.
Completati gli studi trovò lavoro come impiegato ma si dedicò anche all'attività di critico teatrale che lo portò a conoscere l'attore Henry Irving, famoso interprete di Frankenstein con il quale strinse una grande amicizia.
Divenuto segretario di Irving, lo seguì a Londra dove assunse la direzione del Lyceum Theatre.
Come scrittore fu autore di alcuni romanzi e di numerosi racconti di argomento fantastico ma la sua opera più conosciuta e importante è certamente Dracula, la più famosa storia di vampiri, ispirata al personaggio storico di Vlad III di Valacchia, nobile rumeno passato alla storia per le sue imprese militari ma anche per la sua proverbiale crudeltà.
Stoker morì a Londra il 20 aprile 1912.
