All'inizio della carriera si esibiva nei teatri off di Montreal e nella pubblicità televisiva. Nel 1972 entrò nella Compagnia Second City, di Chicago. Nel 1976 ottenne grande successo portando in televisione il suo spettacolo comico. I suoi interventi nella popolare trasmissione "Saturday Night Live" con John Belushi accrebbero la sua notorietà e lo portarono al cinema. Morì improvvisamente sul set durante le riprese di "Wagons East".
